The government is talking up plans to raise the British motorway speed limit to 80mph, which means we could soon all cruise along at at least 84mph without the worry of getting done for it.
Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond is launching a consultation on the plan this year, and if it can get past environmental and safety groups, we could all be getting to places a little over 10 per cent quicker from 2013.
But there will be opposition. Cars are demonstrably less fuel economic at higher speeds, meaning Greenpeace is already on the offensive: "The transport secretary's decision will raise oil consumption and carbon emissions when we need to cut both," said Greenpeace transport campaigner Emma Gibson.
