First Two Operational Galileo Satellites Blast Off Thursday

By Sam Gibbs on at

Will GPS be a thing of the past? The European Commission sure hopes so, as it's aiming to surplant it with its version, Galileo. The first two operational satellites will be blasting into orbit on top of a Soyuz rocket on Thursday.

This will mark the first time the Soyuz rocket has launched from Western soil, which you can watch live on the EC Audiovisual Services site. The EC and the European Space Agency plans to have all 30 of their birds up to 23,600km in the sky by 2019, so unfortunately we're not going to be benefitting from it any time soon. Still, Galileo promises accuracies GPS can only dream of, even if it is drastically over budget and miles off schedule. [ZDNet UK]
