HMS Belfast Gangway Collapses: Two Hurt; Fire Brigade on Twitter

By Gary Cutlack on at

Fresh from its Photoshop insult, another infinitely more serious and tangible problem has struck HMS Belfast -- the gangway connecting the ship to its Thames mooring collapsed yesterday.

170 people had to be evacuated from the ship by boat, including 30 schoolchildren who were sleeping there as part of an initiavtive called Kip on a Ship.

The incident allowed the London Fire Brigade to show off its Twitter credentials, saying: "Ironically we were due to carry out a training exercise on HMS Belfast at 2pm today ... Somehow don't think that will happen now."

Only two contractors working on the ship were hurt in the collapse, with the Imperial War Museum saying they only suffered minor injuries. [BBC]
