TalkTalk is getting ready to launch the first finished YouView product, with a few thousand early adopters able to start trailing its new Freeview-based TV box from early next year.
The private YouView test will start in January, with around 3,000 staff members able to demo the new package, which will use Huawei made set-top boxes to deliver TV on demand via the Freeview network. A subsequent public trial for up to 10,000 users will then launch around Easter.
YouView is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and BT, with all partners contributing equal amounts of the development cost -- and putting their own online catch-up services on the system.
The end result will be a networked Freeview box with catch-up TV support, full PVR features, apps, widgets and HD output, hopefully creating a more coherent and affordable competitor to the Sky and Virgin pay TV empires. [Guardian via Techradar]
