November's Strikers Stayed At Home, On The Internet, Shopping

By Gary Cutlack on at

Stats released by BT's retail division show that online shopping spiked significantly on November 30th last year, the day of the wide-ranging strike of public sector workers. Sales on that day were 45 per cent higher than on the same day in 2010.

This made November 30th the most popular day for online shopping through all of 2011, with striking workers using the spare time to get their presents ordered unusually early.

And despite depressing predictions that we'd all spend Christmas Day on the internet looking for sales and discounts instead of merrily binge eating and watching bland TV, that didn't happen -- more people went bargain shopping on Boxing Day than the big day itself. [BT]
