Turns out the Nexus 7 packs a few extra surprises under its plastic hood. For some odd reason one man decided to grab a few magnets and started waving them around around his brand new tablet, and in the process, uncovered a sleep/wake feature that looks suspiciously familiar. It seems the Nexus 7 has an iPad-esque Smart Cover feature too, only on the opposite side.
While I'm not sure why said person decided to expose his tablet to a magnet, it does show that Google's tablet packs more than meets the eye. Google sell cases in the store, but whether or not they contain this sleep/wake functionality has yet to be seen. It would seem a bit strange as the covers open from right-to-left, but the magnetic sensor is on the left hand side of the tablet. Weird.
Apple holds the patent on their Smart Cover system, so whether or not this functionality on the Nexus 7 infringes on that is yet to be seen. In the meantime, we'll just have to wait and see if some third party manufactures fancy giving us some Nexus Smart Cover-love -- here's hoping it's soon. [AndroidPolice]
