Wikipad Aims to Give Project Shield a Run for its Money

The on/off launch of Wikipad's Android gaming hardware is now definitely in the ON position, with the company announcing plans to launch the smaller, 7" version of its Tegra 3 powered gaming tablet/handheld this spring.

The smaller Wikipad comes with a US price tag of $249 (about £160), for which you receive a device running Android 4.1 on a 1280 x 800 resolution IPS display, alongside 1GB of RAM, an SD card slot and 16GB of onboard storage.

Which sounds good on paper. The problem comes when your eyes moves from spec sheet to the actual Wikipad device itself, with its detachable game controller case a clumsy mess of black plastic more akin to a £7.99 Bluetooth adaptor (or the equally bonkers Project Shield prototype).

Wikipad is also PlayStation Certified, meaning you'll be able to buy Sony's half-hearted range of PlayStation Mobile titles should it ever appear over here. [Wikipad [PDF] via Engadget]
