Game of Thrones season three premiered last night, and that's kind of a big deal. If you're a fan, you'll need no convincing. But if you need proof of its potency, here you go: according to numbers collected by TorrentFreak, the Game of Thrones season three premier now holds the record for the biggest BitTorrent swarm ever.
After the show's premier, there were a whopping 163,088 peers clamouring to download and seed the episode simultaneously, beating out previous record-holder—the season three premier of Heroes— by some twenty thousand. And as of now, it's been downloaded over a million times, par for the course as far as GoT goes.
Why the record setting numbers? First of all it was only screened on Sky Atlantic here, which...how many people have that channel, now? Exactly.
But on top of that there's the issue of international release. Though the majority of pirates at the party were from the US, the UK and Australia weren't far behind. And across the globe, GoT only becomes available legally after a short—but still existent—delay of two hours or so. Two hours too long to wait. Fortunately HBO doesn't seem too threatened by piracy, but if it ever wants to knock down those numbers, it's got a couple of solutions just begging to be implemented. [TorrentFreak]
