Microsoft's Windows 8 and RT tablets have seemingly got off to a bit of a flyer, with number crunchers estimating Windows is now the OS on 7.4 per cent of all portable tabs. Not a bad beginning given the fashionable and cheap Apple and Android onslaught.
The data, released by Strategy Analytics, claims Microsoft has gone from having literally zero per cent of the tablet market in Q1 of 2012 to take a respectable 7.4 per cent in the same quarter of 2013, thanks to shipping on three million devices made by MS and its many OEM buddies, which, although quite a small number, is still a pretty decent start.
Apple's iOS is obviously still the winner, powering 48 per cent of shipped devices in Q1 of 2013, down from 63 per cent the previous year. Android's the big mover, as you might expect, powering 43 per cent of tablets shipped in Q1 -- up from 34 per cent in the same chunk of 2012. [Strategy Analytics]
