This is How You Paint a Plane (With Robots)

By Sam Gibbs on at

Have you ever wondered how you paint something as big and smooth as a plane? Boeing uses two robots that spray an entire wing in just 24 minutes, something that would take puny humans 4.5 hours to achieve. Watch them in action.

The arms wash, prime and paint the thing without human interaction, well, past pressing the go button anyway. Apparently the robotic system was inspired by a visit to BMW's fully-automated car plant, but despite the paintbots doing the business, the rest of a plane's construction is 90 per cent manual.

I'm not sure whether to be filled with confidence or utter dread at the thought that the plane you're flying in is hand built. [Seattle Times via Mashable]
