Wii U a Global Flop as Nintendo Sells Just 160,000 in a Quarter

By Gary Cutlack on at

Nintendo would appear to be out of the home console war, thanks to an utterly miserable financial report revealing it sold just 160,000 Wii U machines last quarter. Around the entire world.

The new console with its bizarre and somewhat confusing tablet controller accessory was even outsold by the ancient casual gaming king Wii, which shifted 210,000 units globally during the same quarter up to the end of June. It's a whopping great disaster for Nintendo. No wonder retailers can't be bothered with it any more.

However, the Japanese giant is the comeback king. Its 3DS console also suffered an amazing post-launch slump, when a paucity of decent games also made that a laughing stock and had gamers declaring it dead. Now 3DS is selling extremely well and is actually making a profit for the gaming giant. So Wii U may still stand a chance of survival when the likes of Mario Kart arrives with the defibrillator next year. [MCV]
