Mother and Daughter Scammed Bored Women out of £700k With Fake Army Hunk Dating Site

By Gary Cutlack on at

Karen Vasseur and her daughter Tracy tricked 374 US ladies into parting with around $1m, after setting up a fake dating site and pretending it was populated by single US service personnel. In fact, it was Karen and Tracy telling lies and begging for money.

Their scheme follows the pattern of many internet scams. Karen, Tracy and some as yet unaccounted for additional staff, would target vulnerable women online, pretending to be US armed forces members serving overseas. After a bit of your usual internet flirting, these pretend soldiers would then ask for money to pay for equipment, phones and the like, money which some some of the poor women actually handed over.

Court documents show that one particular transaction saw a lady hand a staggering $59,000 (£38,000) to Karen & Tracy's fake army boyfriend.

Ironically, Karen and Tracy will soon be eligible to sign up for one of the many legitimate prison dating services available, thanks to facing possible jail terms of between 12 and 15 years for their shameful fakery. [BBC]
