"I've Had the Time of my Life": Steve Ballmer's Teary Farewell to Microsoft

By Gerald Lynch on at

It's the end of an era for Microsoft, with larger-than-life CEO Steve Ballmer bidding an emotional farewell to a huge gathering of employees at his final company meeting as top dog in Redmond. And boy, did he pick some banging tunes to go out on!

Tech's most rambunctious CEO bounded onto the stage at the Key Arena in Seattle in front of over 13,000 employees to the sounds of Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' -- the same track he chose to kick off his first ever company meeting way back in 1983.

Visibly tearful throughout (The Verge reports he was bawling like a baby towards the end), Ballmer gave an inspiring speech to those in attendance.

"We have unbelievable potential in front of us, we have an unbelievable destiny. Only our company and a handful of others are poised to write the future," said Ballmer. "We're going to think big, we're going to bet big."

Things drew to a close with Ballmer screaming "I've had the time of my life" as the Dirty Dancing hit by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes blared out over the PA, a suitably boisterous conclusion to the public career of the loudest CEO tech is ever likely to see. Once more for the road then, here's Steve Ballmer going crazy:
