London's 'Walkie Scorchie' Tower Is Really Just a Massive Free Tanning Salon

Careful where you walk in London on a sunny day, you might end up inadvertently getting cooked. Apparently the weird-looking new Walkie Talkie skyscraper in the city acts as a giant mirror, focussing the Sun's intense rays on the street below, blinding people and actually melting cars.

Dubbed the Walkie Scorchie, given its newfound burning powers, its latest victim seems to have been a Jaguar XJ, which was parked in front of the building for around an hour. In that time the Sun's reflected rays were able to melt both plastic and metal, warping body panels and destroying parts of the outside of the car.

According to City AM, the Jag wasn't the only victim either. A van had every bit of plastic on its left hand side melted, along with the dashboard inside the van's cabin. It's not the first building we've seen capable of melting things, but considering this is Britain we're talking about -- not the most intensely Sun-kissed place in the world -- it's worryingly remarkable. Given it's capable of doing that to vehicles within an hour, maybe they should start selling the spot as an instant natural tanning station? Who needs to go to Spain to get a tan when you can be cooked in your own country? Ouch. [City AM]
