Brits Give Windows Phone a Chance as Market Share More Than Doubles

It's still the donkey in a three-horse smartphone race lead by iOS and Android (the ominous tent of death is going up around the lame-legged BlackBerry as we speak), but Microsoft's Windows Phone platform finally seems to be gaining ground in the UK.

Research firm Kantar Worldpanel has seen UK Windows Phone owners grow from 4.5 percent of the overall market this time last year to 12 percent, more than doubling. Though it still trails behind the competition, it's an impressive growth spurt on our shores.

And it's a trend that seems to be continuing across Europe, with Windows Phone now making up 9.2 percent of the Europe-wide smartphone share. The French are particularly enamoured with the OS, with 10.8 percent of French smartphone users opting for WIndows Phone. In Germany, the figures are even more startling with Windows Phone breathing down the neck of Apple's iOS with 8.8 percent and 9.5 percent of the market share respectively.
