Jony Ive's One-Off MacBook-Like Desk Headed to Auction

By Gerald Lynch on at

Remember Jony Ive's Leica camera? It won't be the only item the Apple design guru puts together for the (RED) charity auction. Next up is this minimalist (RED) Desk, made with help from his pal and equally-esteemed design luminary Marc Newson.

Made using a softer kind of aluminium than your battle-hardened MacBook is, it's perhaps not the most durable desk this side of IKEA, but it'll certainly make a nice centrepiece for an iFanboy's office.

As part of the project, Ive's also been having a chat with Vanity Fair about what inspires his designs, speaking about the importance of working with raw materials as well as 3D modelling software packages:

"We are in an unusual time in which objects are designed graphically, on a computer,” Ive said. “Now we have people graduating from college who don’t know how to make something themselves. It’s only then that you understand the characteristics of a material and how you honor that in the shaping. Until you’ve actually pushed metal around and done it yourself, you don’t understand.”

The desk hits Sotheby's in New York on November 23rd. Check out a couple more angles and close-ups of the desk below. [Vanity Fair via Cult of Mac, Sotheby's via Moco Loco via The Verge]
