Lord Sugar Investigated Over Bizarre Chinese Child "Hate Tweet"

By Gary Cutlack on at

That image there is a joke Lord Sugar thought up and put on the internet. The joke being that underage staff might work in Apple's production lines. It's not a great joke, and if it occurred to Michael McIntyre he probably wouldn't bother writing it down, but is it really racist enough to be described by police as a hate crime?

One internet user complained to the police about Sugar's tweet, leading Merseyside Police to ask her to come to a station and make a statement. The force said of the incident: "Merseyside Police can confirm officers received a complaint in relation to the tweet sent on the evening of Sunday September 30. The communication has been examined by the force's specialist hate crime investigation team and at this time it has been recorded as a hate incident and no criminal offences have taken place."

The lady who complained about Lord Sugar's tweet has explained her position in a bit more detail, saying she complained online and sort of assumed that would be the end of it. But she was phoned by officers twice and asked to make a formal statement, then the newspapers phoned her, and it all sort of went very serious and was blown out of all proportion, as tends to happen with things on the internet these days.
