Vizio's New Bluetooth Speakers Have Android KitKat Tablets Built-In

Bluetooth speakers are all the same right? You connect your phone to them to wirelessly beam bumping music. Not Vizio's brand new Smart Audio speakers though. Vizio's Bluetooth speakers also have a freaking Android tablet running KitKat built in. Yes, there are 7-inch and 4.7-inch tablets on speakers now.

The idea for these speakers—other than the enjoyable excess that is slapping fully functional tablets on speakers—is to give Bluetooth speakers some brains. Instead of passively relying on the power of phones, Vizio's portable smart audio speakers can completely function on their own without a phone. That way you don't have to have your music cut off whenever you get a phone call.

It's the enjoyment of listening to music through your phone (streaming music, etc.) built in to a Bluetooth speaker. Hell, if you wanted to watch Netflix on the tablets with thumping music, you can do that too. The tablets run stock Android which means it's basically a Nexus 7 with huge speakers. And if you still wanted it to function as a normal Bluetooth speaker, you could do that too. The 7-inch version comes with a handle and heavy bass while the 4.7-inch is more portable given its size (though not as portable as say a Jambox).

The final details on these speakers are still being figured out (colours, on board storage size, price and so forth are unknown right now) but it will run stock KitKat and it will have 802.11n Wi-Fi. Frankenstein gadgets like this are usually a tough sell because they solve minor problems by making you pay more money, but knowing Vizio's reputation for being affordable, we'll see how it goes.
