Microsoft May Have Bought WhatsApp, But Not for $19bn, Says Gates

Facebook's astonishing big-money buy of WhatsApp seems to have won the admiration of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who admitted he sees the deal as being a solid one for Facebook, also suggesting that: "Microsoft would have been willing to buy it, too."

The quotes come via an interview Gates gave to Rolling Stone magazine, where the Windows king went on to say about the buyout: "It means that Mark Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be the next Facebook. Mark has the credibility to say, 'I'm going to spend $19 billion to buy something that has essentially no revenue model.' I think his aggressiveness is wise – although the price is higher than I would have expected."

As for how deep Gates would've dug into his loaded pockets, he wouldn't say, adding: "I don't know for $19 billion, but the company's extremely valuable." [Rolling Stone via PC Pro]
