Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Reissued with Lolita-esque Adult Cover

By Gary Cutlack on at

The classic book about the perils of eating too many Mars bars and being a pushy dad is about to be re-released in the Penguin Modern Classics series, with a new cover image to supposedly appeal to the adult market. As long as you don't mind looking like a paedo reading it on the bus.

According to Penguin, the image of the made-up girl is not a representation of either of the female kids in the book, and is supposed to be a generic take on the spoilt child and difficult-parent theme. The fact it's all gone a bit Lolita is infuriating fans of the Roald Dahl classic, which ought to be enjoying its 50th anniversary in quiet reverence without this sort of modern fuss surrounding it.
