W3W is a Three-Word Post Code Alternative

By Gary Cutlack on at

What3words is a new attempt at making location sharing an easy thing, one that breaks the entire world up into 57 trillion 3m x 3m square and gives each one a three word address.

The idea being that sharing your location by saying or typing three words is much easier than sharing a GPS reference or a URL to a map. Once you've got your three words they can be viewed in a browser by sticking them on the end of a w3w.co/ link, so, if it takes off, everyone could have their own home and works catchphrases.

The money-making part of the scheme is that users can buy custom addresses, and brand names are a no-go area -- so "Buy Coke Here" can one day net the founders a nine-figure exit. If it takes off. [w3w]
