Sony Asked Netflix to Start War on VPN Users

By Gary Cutlack on at

Sony is angry with the hardcore niche of TV enthusiasts who trick Netflix into thinking they're in another country to gain access to a different collection of stuff, accusing the streaming site of breaching its licensing terms by allowing users to hack their way into different regions.

The concern comes from company emails spotted in the masses of data stolen in the huge Sony hack, revealing that Sony TV execs asked Netflix to apply harder location filtering controls and suggested the current setup amounts to "semi-sanctioned" piracy in the way, for example, UK users can trick the site into thinking they're in the US.

Sony wanted payment systems to be used to better check control access to  content, which would lead to them having tighter control over licensing agreements. [Ars]
