The 'Alien' Film That Never Was: 'District 9' Director Shows Off Concept Art

By Gerald Lynch on at

In space, no one can hear you scream "MISSED OPPORTUNITY." But that's exactly what seems to have befallen director Neill Blomkamp, he of District 9, Elysium and Chappie fame. It seems he's been secretly been working on a brand new Alien movie, outside of Hollywood studio influence, a project that's seemingly now shelved.

And, to prove it, he's dropped a treasure trove of never-before-seen concept art from the project on his Instagram account. Apparently discounting any events following James Cameron's Aliens, it would reunite Sigourney Weaver's Ripley with Michael Biehn's hicks, with the pair infiltrating the Weyland Yutani corporation.

The space jockey ship, since seen in Prometheus, appeared to have been salvaged, and Ripley would even have got to wear a xenomorph bio-exoskeleton jumpsuit thing. A shot of a xenomorph bust, alongside a small Master Chief of Halo figure seems to date the collection too -- Bloomkamp was linked to a live action Halo feature ahead of 2013's Elysium, but it too never came to be.

"Woulda rocked," Blomkamp notes as the caption to one image. "Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created." While it's unlikely the images will result in any more than pipe dreams, a Twitter account linked to Bloomkamp does tease that "Fox [the studio that owns the rights to the franchise] never said no". We can pray, right? Check out all the work below. [Instagram]
