Enterprising Smugglers Use Drone to Drop Goodies in Prison

An off the shelf DJI Phantom 2 drone was put to bad use by some bad men, who used one of the miniature machines to try to fly contraband goods into Bedford prison.

The attempt failed when pilots crashed the thing into netting placed around the top of the walls to stop people simply chucking stuff in to their reprimanded mates, with authorities recovering the machine and its illegal haul of drugs, weapons, screwdrivers and a mobile phone. Unbelievable the lengths people go to to get the new iPhone.

Bedfordshire police explained: "We were called to reports that a small drone had been discovered alongside a package in netting above a perimeter wall at HMP Bedford at 11.30pm on March 6. Both the device and the contents of the package are currently being examined, and investigations are on-going to identify the offender. We are working closely with the prison to investigate this incident."

A DJI Phantom 2 drone starts at £500 for the basic model. If you could successfully manage to get loads of phones and drugs and Mars bars and copies of Razzle over the wall, you could have quite a profitable little business on the go. [Mirror via Standard]
