Groundhog Day the Musical Comes to London in 2016

A stage musical version of Groundhog Day is in the works, with the audio experience set to land at London's Old Vic theatre before transferring to the brighter and more powerful lights of Broadway.

The musical will be directed by Old Vic manager Matthew Warchus, who will be using the populist piece to help transition his replacement of exiting high profile theatre boss Kevin Spacey. Comedy lyricist Tim Minchin is providing the words for the songs of the new Groundhog thing and will be working with the original film's co-writer Danny Rubin, with the live experience set to arrive in June 2016.

Minchin and Warchus also helped create the popular Matilda musical, which is currently running in London and New York, plus Warchus says there's a play based on Dr Seuss's The Lorax also in the works for the Christmas season.

Before then, there'll be a shedload of arty stuff to get through, with plays by Eugene O'Neill and Tamsin Oglesby fulfilling the high brow remit before the mainstream family fun starts. [BBC]
