Do you feel the need...the need to revive every hallowed original Hollywood franchise in existence and bring it back up to...ahem...speed for modern audiences? Then you should be on a flight to LA with your "Movie Exec in Training" badge on, as yet another 1980s favourite, Top Gun, is due a drone-filled revival.
Speaking at a press junket for Terminator: Genisys (yep, another film cashing in on the good will movie-goers extend its predecessors), Skydance CEO David Ellison revealed that work on the Top Gun 2 flick, a direct sequel to the 1986 dogfighting original, is well underway.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today,” said Ellison, speaking to Variety.
“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters…It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
So, less 'Take my Breath Away' and more 'Take my Control Away and Hand it Over to an Autonomous Killing Machine.' I will lay a considerable amount of money down now on drones being pictured as some sort of villain, which the 'valiant' fighter pilots have to defeat using their wizened old traditional dog fighting reflexes.
And what better a wizened-old Hollywood stalwart than Tom Cruise to do so? Playing lead pilot Maverick in the 1986 original, Cruise looks likely to make a return for Top Gun 2.
“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” hinted Ellison.
No word on a release date yet, but late 2016 (marking the first film's 30th anniversary) would make for a good marketing-friendly bet. [Variety]
