Microsoft Begins Free Windows 10 Rollout

By James O Malley on at

It has been a long time coming but finally today ordinary users to get their hands on Windows 10, as the upgrade rollout begins.

The new OS is big news, as not only will it affect millions of users around the world, but it will also send Microsoft back in the right direction, undoing some of the mistakes of Windows 8. The OS brings back the Start Menu, integrates the Cortana voice assistant and even lets you stream Xbox games from your console to your PC.

The update is free to users of Windows 7 and 8.1 - if you have your PC up to date you should see a Windows 10 icon in the taskbar which will launch an app to check your computer is compatible, and that will virtually "reserve" you a copy of the new OS. You can find out how to upgrade here.

If you can't see the upgrade icon straight away don't panic - Microsoft is expected to be carrying out a staggered roll-out so it doesn't crash Microsoft's servers. If you wait a few hours, it should hopefully then appear.

Gizmodo's Sean Hollister has already been trying the new OS - you can find his experiences on day 1, day 2 and days 3 & 4.

So quick! Go upgrade! And let us know what you think of Windows 10 when you've given it a try.
