Could Rey Have a Double-Sided Lightsaber in Star Wars Episode VIII? Stunt Double Will Make You Hope So

By Gerald Lynch on at

This is Chloe Bruce. She was the stunt double for Daisy Ridley (aka Rey) in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Chloe Bruce is awesome:

The video, posted back in November but picking up some viral pace this week, shows Bruce looking completely deadly with some sort of fighting staff. It shows why she was an obvious choice to double up as Rey, given that Ridley's character is armed through most of the film with a staff.

But, as a mere Jedi in training, Rey didn't get to show off moves anywhere near as flashy as this in The Force Awakens. So if Bruce was cast with her staff skills in mind, you'd have to wonder if she's in for the long haul.

Oh, and those twirly staff moves. Remind you of anyone?

Now, assuming Rey does go on to train as a Jedi in Star Wars Episode VIII (which I'd say was a given), and assuming Chloe Bruce returns to show off some of those crazy moves, what do you reckon the chances are that Rey eventually gets to build her own double-bladed lightsaber?

I'd say pretty high – in terms of her character, she's already got a penchant for the fighting style. In terms of Star Wars' recent heritage, one of the few redeeming features of the prequel trilogy was Darth Maul's gnarly dual-bladed fight scenes. And, in terms of merchandising, you can bet a double-bladed lightsaber could hit shelves with a way higher price tag than a regular one – an opportunity Disney would not want to miss. Maul's an under-used fan favourite, and as Kylo Ren's handguard saber showed, the sequel trilogy isn't afraid of playing with less traditional lightsaber designs.

As for Bruce, whose CV also includes appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World and Wrath of the Titans, you can next see her kicking ass as stunt double for both Ariane Labed and Michelle Lin in the Assassin's Creed movie.
