World's Biggest Wind Farm to be Built Off the Coast of the UK

By Jamie Condliffe on at

Offshore wind company Dong Energy has announced that it’s to build the world's biggest wind farm off the coast of Yorkshire. It will cover 160 square miles, be home to 174 wind turbines (each one over 180 metres tall), and eventually generate 1.2 gigawatts of power; that's enough to provide electricity for a million homes.

The UK government has committed over £130 million to the project, which will require 2,000 people to work on design and construction in the coming years. Dong hopes the turbines will be up and running by 2020.

It’s an ambitious plan. But we need ambitious plans if we’re to achieve what world leaders agreed at last December’s climate talks in Paris. [Dong Energy]
