Judge Dredd Comic 2000 AD Predicted the Budget Sugar Tax Years Ago

By Aatif Sulleyman on at

The sugar tax is officially on its way, which basically means that the sickly-sweet drinks we can't live without are going to hurt our wallets just as much as our bodies. However, the move should come as no surprise, and not just because of Jamie Oliver’s 'look-at-me' style of campaigning.

Judge Dredd comic 2000 AD, published way back in February 1989, predicted the future. That Sweet Stuff follows the exploits of Billiam Wurrows, an unemployed and unemployable young man with a dangerous sugar addiction. After picking up some West Coast White in a dodgy alley, Wurrows is eventually tracked down by the almighty Dead Man and... well, you can guess the rest.

Okay, it's not quite bang on, but nor should it be. This is the horrible world of Judge Dredd we're talking about. The fact we're in the same ballpark is scary enough.

Check out the entire strip on the 2000 AD Tumblr, but before you reach for a can, remember, the consequences will be anything but sweet. [2000ADOnline]
