Analysis Shows Just How Much Reddit Commenters Love Their Hitler References

By Gary Cutlack on at

Analysis of the most popular threads on social site Reddit show that the Hitler comment is alive and well, with well over 70 per cent of all posts with more than 1,000 replies eventually featuring in a reference to everyone's least favourite historical megalomaniac and/or his political party.

The numbers have been crunched by statistician Curious Guru, who tracked around 4.6 million Reddit comments for references to "Hitler" and use of the word "Nazi" to describe people with differing opinions on how funny cat photos are and how good Top Gear is.

"Unsurprisingly, the probability of a Nazi reference increases as the threads get bigger," the data miner explained, eventually calculating that the likelihood of a Hitler/Nazi reference would be well over 70 per cent in threads with more than 1,000 replies.

That said, Gnu notes that "...due to entirely understandable time constraints, Gnu's data does not account for the context these words appear in — only that they appear at all" so there may be some leeway in the data. People might be talking about Inglourious Basterds or what their great grandad did in the war, not just being offensive to strangers for fun. [Gnu via The Verge]
