Films, Games, Events: What to Get up to This Weekend

By Aatif Sulleyman on at

What a day. The weekend is here, so stick your fingers in the corners of your mouth and pull a great big smile. Here's what to get up to if you don't end up drinking yourself into oblivion.

Independence Day: Resurgence is the one to watch this weekend, and how painfully appropriate it is that the film has been widely panned. Dull and disappointing is the general consensus, but it’s probably still worth a watch regardless of which side you voted for in the EU Referendum.

Remainers might feel a little less bad about the future of the UK. Then again, it looks like extra-terrestrials are easier to defeat than xenophobia. The film will certainly warm the hearts of Leavers, meanwhile, with those monstrous aliens representing foreigners and Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth portraying Boris and Nigel.

Our top recommendation this week is VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action, a game Kotaku describes as “a must-buy for fans of interactive fiction, stylised retro games, cyberpunk and girls with cat ears.” What more could you possibly want?

Who cares about Glastonbury on Pride weekend? The main London Parade takes place tomorrow afternoon, so get colourful and celebrate diversity in a moment of darkness. Oh yeah, the world’s tallest slide has also just opened up at the Olympic Park and the Manchester Children’s Book Festival is on all weekend. That’s a lot to cheer about.

A special mention to the Kendal Mountain Festival Outdoor Cinema too, which looks breathtaking.
