So here's an interesting piece of news to finish off your Tuesday. Speaking at Denver Comic Con (via ScienceFiction.com), Karl Urban broke one extra-surprising piece of news to the audience.
After much praying, campaigning, bitching, and four long years, Dredd 2 is apparently in development.
Not "talks are being had", which has been the go-to line for many-a-year, he actually said it's in development. That suggests something official is actually happening, and all I have to say is that it's about fucking time.
It's been a difficult road since Dredd came out in 2012. The film was well received by critics and audiences alike, but only make $36 million of its $50 million budget back at the box office. Something that Karl Urban has consistently blamed on poor marketing.
He's also been incredibly supportive of fan campaigns to get a sequel greenlit, personally visited 200AD HQ last month, and has gone on record to say that he doesn't care where or how the sequel happens - just as long as it does.
So what does this mean? It's not all that clear. We don't know whether we're going to see a cinema release, Netflix/Amazon Prime commission, or a TV series. We don't even have official confirmation from a studio that the film is definitely going to happen. Still, the fact that Urban's language has changed to something more committal is a very good sign.
