This 1970s 'Flux Capacitor' is the World's Fastest Road-Legal Electric Car

A modified version of an electric car originally built in the UK back in the 1970s now claims to be the fastest EV in the world, thanks to a racing enthusiast who replaced the car's original 8hp power unit with a more modern version capable of outputting some 800bhp.

Jonny Smith built the thing, which took the quarter-mile record at the Santa Pod raceway by covering the ground in 9.86 seconds -- beating the previous best of 10.25 seconds. The car, now known as the Flux Capacitor but previously known as the Enfield 8000, hasn't had any external modifications to cope with the increased speed and power, although internally the 188 brand new li-ion cells that power it must substantially lower luggage capacity.

"Originally the car was designed to drive up to speeds of 40mph," said Smith. "Now it triples the speed within quarter of a mile without any aerodynamic alterations -- which is testament to the original design." And that original Enfield design was put together by John Ackroyd, a man who went on to work on the designs for the Thrust 2 supercar that held the land speed record for a few years in the 1980s.
