Despite the fact that he seems to be giving away his billions to anyone who asks nicely enough, Bill Gates is still the richest person in the world. Not just that, but his wealth has hit a record high of $90 billion.
That's according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index anyway, which says Gates is now $13.5 billion richer than the next person on the list (Spanish retail mogul Amancio Ortega). Gates can thank this sudden gain in wealth to gains in public holdings companies like Canadian National Railway Company and Ecolab Inc. It's also 0.5 per cent of the US GDP.
Just look at this chart, showing how his wealth has grown over the past four years. Even more shocking is dips of a few billion dollars that correct themselves after less than a year.
Congrats on the wealth, Bill, and if you're reading this feel free to throw a few hundred thousand pounds my way. It would be nice to buy myself a house. [Bloomberg]
