Got an Empty Attic? Here's a Clever Way To Hide Your Flatscreen TV

By Andrew Liszewski on at

They’re nowhere near as huge as the CRT and rear-projection TVs many of us grew up with, but a sizeable flatscreen can still take up quite a bit of space in a room—unless you find some clever way to make it disappear at the push of a button.

You might wonder what living space is being sacrificed on the upper floor of this home every time the TV retracts, but the answer is none, there’s only an empty attic up there. In the limited space available above their living room, this resourceful home hacker managed to squeeze in space for the TV, a remotely operated winch, and a counterweighted pulley system.

The custom setup does limit how large a TV the homeowner can upgrade to in the future—no bigger than the hole in the ceiling without additional renovations. But the extra space made available in the room without a huge entertainment centre against one wall makes this hack worth considering. [YouTube via Imgur]
