The Week in Geek: Star Trek Discovery, Power Rangers, Batfleck, and More

By Tom Pritchard on at

Welcome to another addition of the Week in Geek. This week we have news about Star Trek Discovery's protagonist, new backstory for the Power Rangers movie, a rough release window for Ben Affleck's Batman movie, and more.

Star Trek: Discovery

Casting news for the upcoming sci-fi series is slowly trickling out, and now we finally know who will be playing the lead character. According to Entertainment WeeklyThe Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green will be playing the role, known only as 'Number One' for the moment. Unlike other Star Trek series, she won't be the captain of the USS Discovery. Instead it sounds as though she will be the first officer.

After many unconfirmed rumours, Ben Affleck's Batman movie has been confirmed for a 2018 release date. Affleck himself said that the film is currently on track to start filming next Spring, so you can probably expect the film to land in the latter half of the following year. Despite the new confirmed release date, earlier this week Affleck did say that he's still working on the script. Telling The New York Times:

“I’m a real believer in not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date. So, that’s what we’re doing. I’m really mindful of that. I’m not in any hurry to jam a mediocre film down the pipe.”

Power Rangers

New details have emerged regarding the characters in the new Power Rangers movie, thanks to The Wrap. According to the site, Rita Repulsa is being imagined as an ancient green ranger who went rogue after trying to focus the source of the Rangers' power, an artefact known as the Zeo crystal. The crystal is hidden on Earth and protected by a forcefield that vaporises anything that comes into contact with it. Rita enlisted the help of Goldar to steal the crystal and deliver it to Lord Zedd, who burned off half his face trying to steal it.

On the other side, Zordon is supposedly an ancient red ranger who was transformed into an energy-like state to lead others in the fight against Rita. Alpha 5 is also supposedly able to mutate his body to maximise his usefulness.

If you're more interested in the TV series, a trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers Ninja Steel has arrived.

The Power Rangers movie will hit cinemas on March 24th 2017, and Ninja Steel will debut in the US in January.

Star Wars

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has revealed to BBC News that the upcoming Han Solo film will start filming in February for next year, ready for its release in May 2018.

As you can see, she also revealed that there will be a trailer for Episode VIII fairly soon, and will likely debut sometime in Spring. That film is due out next December.

All New Wolverine

Marvel's mutant-heavy ResurXion event is starting next year, and until now we haven't seen anything about the new Wolverine - better known as Laura Kinney/X-23. Now we know that the main All New Wolverine series isn't going anywhere, and will be tying in to the event with a new story arc and a new look for Laura. Thankfully the issue count isn't being reset to #1.

Gamespot revealed that the new arc is called 'Immune' and will feature an alien child infected with an alien contagion crash-landing on Earth and spreading the disease to the local population. As SHIELD struggles to quarantine the outbreak, the child is only capable of saying one thing 'Laura Kinney'. So it's up to X-23 to enter the quarantine zone and find out her connection to the mess. Unfortunately once she goes in, she can't come out.

The arc will feature a brand new suit for X-23, leaving behind the classic-Wolverine inspired yellow spandex and opting for something inspired by her X-force uniform. The arc will be written by Tom Taylor, with art from Leonard Kirk.

There have been rumours surrounding the villain of the upcoming Aquaman movie for quite some time, and now it's been confirmed that Jason Momoa's Atlantean King will go up against his half brother Ocean Master - played by Patrick Wilson. Easter egg enthusiasts will already know that Wilson had a voice cameo in Batman v Superman, playing the US president over the phone.

Ocean Master, better known as Orm Marius, is full-blooded Atlantean (compared to Aquaman who is half human) and is generally bitter than he did not inherit the throne of Atlantis. While it's not clear whether he'll be going under his comics title in the film, it's likely that he's going to cause some problems for the aquatic hero. There's still no word on previous rumours that claimed we'd be seeing Black Manta in the film.

With this week's news that the Harley Quinn spin-off will be titled Gotham City Sirens and directed by Suicide Squad's David Ayer, more reports have arrived regarding the future of the supervillain team on film. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Warner Bros wants to move ahead with another spin-off film focusing on Will Smith's Deadshot, and is already planning a Suicide Squad sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunn has shared some assets from his original pitch, showing how initially envisioned the opening scene of the film.

Aside from a couple of small details (including the name of the planet), you can see that it didn't really change by the time the film came out.
