There are plenty of rude-sounding street names around the UK, like Bush Lane, Butt Hill Road, Cockermouth, Minge Lane, and an entire London suburb called Cockfosters. Those are all real by the way, as is Bell End in Sandwell. While we might drive past and snigger at the fact the street shares its name with part of the male genitalia, the residents have had enough and want the name changed.
The residents of the street, which leads onto the also-problematically-named Mincing Lane, have had enough with being considered a "laughing stock" and are asking the council change the street name to sensible-sounding Bells Road. There's a petition on Change.org and everything, with 13 people supporting the motion.
"As you may be aware, the term “Bell End” can be seen and used as a rude and/or a offensive word. As well as this, it can affect people and children including children being bullied and teased at school and generally now become a laughing stock as seen very recently on Facebook and other social media sites and it’s time for a change. Further to this, it’s one of the rudest road names in England! Feel free to Google and the results will confirm this.
We want the local Sandwell Council to acknowledge our name change request to a new road name and at the very least to a similar name. The local councillors for the local area will be contacted too."
Barbara Price, councillor for Rowley Regis, said she understands the residents' concerns, and has promised to meet with other members of the council to discuss the matter - noting that it is problematic if people do find the name offensive and children are being bullied because of it. Meanwhile Chris Tranter, councillor and Bell End resident, isn't bothered by the name.
"I was born here and lived here for 40 years and it doesn’t bother me. You get the odd giggle on the phone, it is quite amusing really."
I suppose if you move onto a street called 'Bell End' you should probably be aware that people are going to laugh. It'd be like moving to a street called Bum Boulevard or Bush Avenue. There's also no point getting offended over it, especially since this street was probably named before bell end had anything to do with the penis. Still a name change doesn't exactly hurt anyone, except maybe map makers. [Metro]
