In news that will likely make Italian cultural traditionalists vomit in disgust, Morrisons has just announced that it's putting a Yorkshire Pudding pizza on its shelves. No that's not a pizza with bits of Yorkshire Pudding on it, it's a pizza inside one giant Yorkshire Pudding.
And it's just in time for Yorkshire Pudding Day, which is tomorrow.
The final product looks a bit like one of the exaggerated Chicago Deep Dish Pizzas you see pictures of, and feels like it has plenty in common with lasagne. Naturally it's filled with plenty of tomato and mozzarella, with the toppings on top. Those toppings are a choice of either pepperoni and mini meatballs, or spicy beef and jalapenos. Unfortunately there are no vegetarian options, and because it's a normal pizza vegans are similarly out of luck.
The supermarket isn't the first place to merge Yorkshire Pudding and pizza (that honour goes to Rebel's Smokehouse takeaway in Beverly), but it is available across the country for everyone to try. Jenny Dixon, Yorkshire Pudding Expert at Morrisons said:
“Everyone loves Yorkshire Pudding and everyone loves Pizza, so we are combining the two to create the ultimate comfort food for Yorkshire Pudding Day. The crust is made the same way as a typical Yorkshire Pudding and is topped the same way as one of our pizzas. We’re looking forward to hearing what customers think but we hope that they’ll love it!”
The Yorkshire Pudding pizzas will cost £3 each (which seems expensive considering their size), and are available in 491 Morrisons stores until 20th February. [Independent]
