Supermarket chain Waitrose is about to make a token gesture regarding the environment, announcing a plan to eradicate all single-use disposable cups from its hot drinks bank by the end of the year.
Waitrose won the hearts of legions of consumers by offering its loyalty club members free hot drinks while they shop, but if they want to carry on guzzling down the coffee while shopping they'll soon have to bring their own mug. Imagine the stress involved in looking through your collection of chipped mugs that mostly came with Easter eggs to find one that's middle-class enough to take to Waitrose.
The chain says this could stop more than 50 million disposable cups being disposed of, with nine branches starting the scheme this week to see how much of a revolt there is.
Waitrose's Tor Harris said: "We realise this is a major change, but we believe removing all takeaway disposable cups is the right thing to do for our business and are confident the majority of customers will support the environmental benefits. It underlines our commitment to plastic and packaging reduction and our aim is to deliver this as quickly as possible." [Waitrose]
