Brighton Joins Attacks on Uber and Refuses Licence Renewal

By Gary Cutlack on at

Hammered men on stag dos may soon have to find a new way of ordering a taxi to scrape them back to the Travelodge, as Brighton council has joined the war on Uber by refusing to renew the minicab firm's licence.

The official reason is something to do with data security and driver provenance, with a council spokesperson saying: "Our priority is the safety of residents and visitors and, due to the data breach and the lack of commitment to using drivers licensed here, we were not satisfied that UBL (Uber Britannia Limited) are a fit and proper person to hold an operator's licence."

Uber has already said it plans to appeal the decision, so, as with London and the other cities trying to give the app the boot, it'll be allowed to continue operating while the legal people work their magic. [Sky News]
