Opera for Android is Now the First Browser With a Built-in Crypto Wallet

By Tom Pritchard on at

Opera has already shown itself to be more than willing to adapt to the new crypto currency fad that's been sweeping the world, with built-in tools that prevent sites from using your device to mine crypto coins whenever you use them. Now its decided that this isn't enough, and has launched a new crypto wallet that doesn't rely on separate apps of extensions.

It's currently only available for the beta version of Opera for Android, but the wallet itself is designed to lower the barrier of entry for people who are just getting started with this crypto currency thing - whether they're users or developers. It's also meant to be simple and secure (without the need for complex passwords of PIN codes), can integrate with the Ethereum Web3 API, supports crypto tokens and collectables, as well as giving developers more of an incentive to create Web3 decentralised apps (Dapps). As for making crypto payments, Opera promises that it's just as easy as using any other mobile payment system.

Charles Hamel, Product Lead of Opera Crypto said:

“Having a Crypto Wallet in the browser brings the cash experience to the world of online payments,” said . “Paying with the Crypto Wallet is like sending digital cash straight from your phone, and we’ve just made it easier. This opens up new possibilities for merchants and content creators alike.

“We believe the web of today will be the interface to the decentralized web of tomorrow,” said Hamel. “By becoming the the first major browser to open up to Web 3.0, we would like to contribute to making the internet of the future more accessible. Our hope is that this will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users’ daily lives.”

If you want to give the wallet a try you can sign up for the private beta here with your Google account, which will let you access the download page on Google Play.
