Twitch Streams Pokémon, Starting 27th August

If you're like me you probably didn't hear about, or think much of, Twitch until the arrival of Twitch Plays Pokémon. The game began in 2014 with Pokémon Red, and featured the audience typing in commands to control what was going on on-screen. Miraculously they managed to beat the game, and Twitch was thrust into the mainstream. So it seems fitting that Twitch is returning to the Pokémon franchise with a marathon livestream of the animated series.

The marathon will involve 16 films and 932 episodes of the show, spanning 19 series from the original Indigo League season all the way to 2015's XYZ. That episode count makes it the longest marathon Twitch will have streamed, beating the 500-string episode count from the recent Doctor Who marathon. the whole thing kicks off on 27th August at 10am PDT (better known as 6pm in proper time). Sadly there isn't a schedule of exactly what will be on when just yet.

On top of this, Twitch will also be releasing an extension called "Twitch Presents: Pokémon Badge Collector.” The premise of this is to make the stream more interactive, letting viewers collect gym badges as they appear on screen, collecting points in the process. Yes, there's a leaderboard too.

Jane Weedon, Director of Business Development at Twitch, said:

“The Twitch community has a passion for Pokémon based on the warm embrace the series received when we celebrated the brand’s 20th anniversary, as well as the cultural milestone that was set when over a hundred thousand Twitch members played Pokémon together. To continue to support this beloved property, our upcoming Pokémon: The Series viewing event--which is in partnership with The Pokémon Company International--marks our most ambitious block of animated programming to date in terms of duration and content. Making it even more special, an overlay created using our exclusive Extensions product will let viewers collect Pokémon when they appear on-screen for the ultimate interactive viewing experience."
