Android Pie Finally Comes to OnePlus 5 and 5T, But Only in Beta

By Tom Pritchard on at

It's been a while since OnePlus announced that it would be bringing Android Pie to older OnePlus devices, rather than just supporting this year's phones. Sadly there was never any indication on when the updated software would arrive. Well good news for anyone still rocking a OnePlus 5 and 5T, because Android Pie just arrived in the latest Open Beta.

Obviously beta software comes with a lot more risks than you'd find in the stable release, which is still a little while off, but if you're sick of Android Oreo you have a brand new option available to you. That's the beauty of Open Betas, nobody needs to scramble around to try and get one of a limited number of places. Here are all the changes you can expect to enjoy:

  • System
    • Updated system to Android™ 9.0 Pie™
    • Brand new UI for Android Pie
    • Brand new navigation gestures (this is only for 5T)
    • Updated Android security patch to 2018.11
    • Optimizations for background app process handling
  • Do Not Disturb mode
    • New Do Not Disturb mode with adjustable settings
  • Communication
    • UI Improvements for emergency rescue
    • Optimized UI for speed dial and calling interface
    • Now able to assign a specific SIM for a specific contact or group of contacts when using dual SIM
  • Parallel Apps
    • Added support for more apps (Telegram, Discord, IMO, Uber, OLA) in parallel apps
  • Weather
    • Now able to switch dynamically to your current location
    • Display more suggestions when the search function is used
    • Fixed an issue that prevented the app from refreshing when the location is changed
    • Fixed an issue that resulted in some users being unable to find certain locations

If you're already running an open beta version of OxygenOS on a 5 or 5T, you should get the latest Pie-toting build as a regular over-the-air update. If you don't, but you want it, you can find all the right downloads by heading to this page and picking your phone. Make sure to select the 'Beta Build' tab, and check it's offering the right version. The one with Pie is Open Build 22 if you have a OnePlus 5, and Open Build 20 for the 5T.

There's no word on when we can expect a stable release, but this a step in the right direction. Then we just have to wait an undetermined amount of time for Pie to arrive on the OnePlus 3 and 3T. [OnePlus via Android Police]
