They've already shipped 200m phones in 2018, but Huawei's not stopping now: today the smartphone megamanufacturer announced a new version of the P Smart phone.
The original P Smart featured twice in EE's January sales deals, suggesting the network was trying to clear stock ASAP, and this is likely why.
The P Smart 2019 features a 'dewdrop display', otherwise known as a mini notch like on the Essential Phone. It also packs:
- 6.21-inch screen with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 415ppi, FHD+ (2340 x 1080)
- Octa-core chipset Kirin 710 (4 x 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4 x 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53)
- 3GB RAM
- 64GB storage
- 8MP wide-aperture (f/2.0) selfie camera with AI
- 13MP + 2MP dual rear cameras with AI
- 3400mAh battery
- EMUI 9.0 over Android Pie
Huawei is aiming the P Smart 2019 at "young consumers seeking an affordable, high quality user experience." That doesn't mean much, but the company seems to have concentrated on strong camera performance and good battery life on this phone. The dual rear cameras promise "studio-quality portraits" as a result of the depth-sensing second sensor and AI capabilities:
"AI operates in the background to intelligently recognise over 500 scenes and provide real-time optimisations, bridging the skill gap between a photography amateur and a professional. Furthermore, the Huawei AI Image Stabilisation works in concert with the wide-aperture lens to produce bright, detailed, low-noise nighttime photos without the need for a tripod."
The P Smart will come in three colours: Midnight Black, Aurora Blue and Turquoise Blue. The handset has a 3D curved unibody with a ceramic-effect back panel, and the power button and fingerprint sensor have both been tested to over 200,000 presses without deteriorating (much).
Justin Costello, Head of Marketing for Huawei UK & Ireland says between selfies:
"Huawei’s devices truly disrupted the smartphone arena in 2018, making us the fastest growing smartphone brand in the UK and the second biggest globally.
With its outstanding AI, photography and performance capabilities, the Huawei P Smart 2019 delivers a superior smartphone experience at an accessible price point. We look forward to launching the device in the UK next month, in what is set to be the start of an even more ambitious year for our brand."
The phone will be released on the 10th of January at a whole load of retailers, including Amazon, AO, Argos, Carphone Warehouse, Clove, Vodafone, Sky, Tesco and Virgin Mobile. It'll also be at EE from the 11th and O2 and Three in mid-January.
We don't have a UK price yet, but given that it's going on sale in two weeks, we'll know sooner rather than later.
