The Grand Tour wouldn't be the same without James May (just ask Top Gear). So the news that he's off on his own for a new Amazon Prime Video series might sound worrying – until you find out that he'll still be back in time for season four.
Amazon has just commissioned a solo series with May called 'Our Man In... Japan' and as you might have guessed from the weirdly placed ellipsis in the title, this is the first of several exploring different places. Hammond and Clarkson will also get their own.
James May's series will see Captain Slow making his way across one of the most interesting countries in the world, as he tries to get to grips with a very different culture and not make any gaffes. Good luck with that.
May set out from Heathrow yesterday on his adventure, and said:
"Japan is the most amazing place I’ve ever visited. Everything about it is a surprise: a boiled sweet, a bullet train, an unexpected ancient temple, and the challenge of eating a single edamame bean with chopsticks. It’s a class A stimulant for all the senses, and an etiquette minefield for the unwary.
I intend to immerse myself in it completely, in the pursuit of enlightenment and life balance. And I bet the noodles will be fantastic."
Our Man In... Japan will have six episodes, and it's only just started production so we probably won't be seeing the final result for a while.

Georgia Brown, Director of Amazon Prime Original Series in Europe, comments between green tea KitKats:
"We’re incredibly excited to announce this new project with James, which will see him take on an epic thousand mile journey across ancient Japanese islands, mega cities, and all points in between.
The Grand Tour fans around the world will be delighted to hear that they will have even more James May on their screens. We can’t wait to see what James and his talented team produce from this ambitious adventure."
Did we mention that May doesn't speak Japanese? This will be fun.
