Oppo has well and truly arrived in the UK, and we're pretty happy to have another brand making surprisingly inexpensive smartphones in the vein of Honor, Huawei, Xiaomi and co.
The Chinese company's latest launch is the AX7, a £199 handset exclusive to Carphone Warehouse. It's only available in one colour, but rather than going for a dull black like a lot of brands, Oppo's chosen Glaze Blue, a gorgeous textured turquoise.
We'd have preferred silver-toned accents to gold, but you can't win 'em all.
The specs are pretty good considering the price: you get a 6.2-inch in-cell HD+ display with teardrop notch and Gorilla Glass, although it doesn't specify which version. The bezels are a little bigger than you get on the current flagships, but the screen-to-body ratio is 88.4 per cent, which is still good.
You get dual rear cameras at 13 + 2MP and a wide-angle 16MP selfie camera, which apparently includes AR stickers. We'll pass on those.
Hardware-wise, the AX7 runs on the Snapdragon 450 mid-range octa-core chipset and 4GB of RAM. There's 64GB of onboard storage and a microSD slot that takes a card up to 256GB. The battery is surprisingly capacious at 4320 mAh, but software-wise you're on Android Oreo rather than the newer Pie, with Oppo's ColorOS over the top.
Neil You, Oppo Mobile UK's MD, comments:
"We’re excited to bring the A series to the UK with the launch of the AX7 exclusively available at Carphone Warehouse. The device is packed with great features.
Waterdrop Screen has been widely accepted as the most beautiful notch type smartphone in the market."
Sounding a tiny bit defensive there, Neil, but we get the point.
The Oppo AX7 is available now SIM-free for £199 at (you guessed it) Carphone Warehouse.
