Virgin Atlantic Draws Men on its Aeroplanes

By Gary Cutlack on at

Virgin is about to change one of the mildly sexist legacy things it inherited from back when women were only things, and is to start adding men and people of all sexual orientations and skin colours to its planes' cockpit figurehead series.

Instead of the usual sexy white "Flying Lady" from the 1930s, the new fleet of Virgin Atlantic A350-1000 planes are to feature a black man and woman icon and even one of a man who's clearly gay because he's wearing the rainbow hotpants that the government is soon to force all gay men to wear. This better represents modern Britain, says Virgin, although there doesn't seem to be one of a man who looks like Nigel Farage proudly holding a pint of beer that he hasn't realised is from Germany.

Virgin Atlantic's Nikki Humphrey said: "We have been working for a number of years to tackle our gender pay gap, create an inclusive workplace and increase the diversity of our workforce, through the development of our Springboard scheme for women, as well as the launch of engineering apprenticeships. By introducing our new Flying Icons I hope it encourages people from all backgrounds to feel at home flying with us, but also working with us." [Virgin Atlantic via Sky News]
