Well they weren't joking about it and have actually gone and done it: there's a brand new branch of York chip shop Scotts open for business in Chengdu, China.
And they've gone totally bonkers with the design too, 3D-scanning elements of the existing Scotts and various other UK chippies and recreating them in all-white carved plastics, for artistic reasons. A spokesperson for architect Unknown Works explained: "The influence of design was a play on the stereotype of China copying and imitating Western culture and the project aims to frame the discussion around the guises of what cultural exchange, dialogue and trade can take in modern Sino-British relationships."
Clever. It's open for business now, in what we are assured is an upmarket shopping district within China's fourth-largest city.
