Nokia Launches a Pared Back Flip Phone That's Not Optimised for Apps

Nokia has launched yet another phone here in the UK, and it's a throwback to the flip phones of yesteryear.

Hot on the heels of this month's Nokia 6.2 and 7.2 comes the 2720 Flip, which reimagines the original 2720 handset.

Touted as a device that makes a digital detox possible whilst also keeping you connected to your essential apps, like WhatsApp and Facebook which are preloaded onto the handset. Not that we expect they'll be intuitive or easy to use on that tiny 2.8-inch screen, and T9 keyboard.

"We know how important it is to be connected to what matters. With Nokia 2720 Flip we wanted to bring modern everyday essentials like 4G, WhatsApp and the Google Assistant to a familiar flip-phone format, that fans both love and remember," said Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global chief product officer.

"Nokia 2720 Flip is the latest addition to our Originals family and joins the Nokia 8110 4G as an excellent option for people looking for a smarter feature phone.”

Dumb phones seem to be quite the rage these days for people who can't figure out how to turn on airplane mode, or can't muster enough self-control not to whip out their phone every other second. Just last month, the Kickstarter campaign for the Mudita Pure smashed its £80k goal in its first day on the crowd-funding platform, while Google's experimental paper phone is a mind-bogglingly stupid idea that appears to be resonating with people who are new to the concept of notebooks and personal organisers.

The Nokia 2720 is priced isn't made of paper and is available to buy right now for £89.99 from John Lewis and Carphone Warehouse.

Alongside the 2720 Flip, Nokia has also launched its super tough 800, designed to be durable.

"With Nokia 800 Tough we’ve taken durability to the next level, making sure it’s water, dust proof and climate protection.# said Sarvikas. "With the added drop protection, Nokia 800 Tough is truly built tough. And of course, we didn’t want to give our fans just a durable device, so we’ve made sure Nokia 800 Tough is built with today’s needs in mind. That’s why we’ve included the Google Assistant, social apps and 4G connectivity, for all the best experiences on a smart feature phone.”

The 800 is on sale now over on Amazon for £109.99.
